Guest Lecture Direct interactive marketing @ IIPM B-School

INDIA’S BEST COLLEGES, INSTITUTES and UNIVERSITIES

IIPM is India’s Global B-School. IIPM was founded by renowned economic visionary Dr. M.K Chaudhuri in the year 1973. It is ranked No.1 in Placement Record,Quality of Faculty and Global Exposure. It is ranked No.2 in Student Development,Potential to Network and Infrastructure. It is ranked No.7 in Course Contents amongst all B-Schools in India.

The 4P’s club of IIPM Chandigarh conducted a seminar on: “Direct interactive marketing” on 28th Jan, 2011. The guest speakers were Mr. Gurneet Soni Head – Post Paid Sales-AIRCEL and Mr. Ankur Bhanot, Marketing Manager-DELL who have more than 8 years of experience in direct marketing.

The session began with brief introduction on what direct marketing is about and how important it is to become a successful direct and interactive marketer.

Mr. Ankur Bhanot stressed on how Direct interactive combines expertise in sales, marketing, and new media technology to offer innovative solutions to assist the customers and successfully meeting the business objectives.

He further explained the direct marketing model being used in DELL and how DELL has evolved in the Indian market. The direct marketing discipline has undergone a sea change. A wave of new technologies and tactics are providing marketers the ability to deliver highly targeted marketing programs that drive customer acquisition, retention, and penetration. Various interactive marketing tools and strategies, such as targeted Web marketing, e-mail direct marketing, and online customer behavior analysis, wherein these marketing tools promise to deliver superior performance and more measurable business impact than traditional marketing. These interactive marketing technologies offer two major benefits to sales and marketing executives: 1) improved marketing economies; and 2) the ability to profit from a better understanding of customer buying behavior. As a result, businesses will allocate more marketing resources to these highly targeted and personalized direct marketing programs.

Mr. Gurneet Soni focussed on direct marketing in transition wherein he explained how direct marketing programs have offered better targeting, greater personalization, and more efficient use of marketing dollars. Most businesses will compete on the basis of customer relationships and personalized marketing approaches. The ongoing challenge to business is deciding how fast to change. To maintain market leadership, sales and marketing executives must struggle to balance the risks of experimenting with unproven marketing tools and new customer behaviors against the cost of missing out on a significant business innovation or new customer trend.

Porf. Amit Baruah threw light on how in the long term, successful interactive direct marketing will require a different set of management skills and disciplines. Sales and marketing leaders need to develop an understanding of which tools and tactics have demonstrated the greatest business impact in their industry and a much clearer vision of customers based on how they will most likely buy in the future.

The speakers concluded that businesses that struggle to incorporate these leading-edge interactive direct marketing technologies into their sales and marketing mix now will learn how to improve the productivity and targeting of their sales and marketing systems. Leaders will actively anticipate change and fine-tune their sales and marketing mix as an ongoing discipline. This will involve constantly testing new tools and taking measure of changing customer buying behavior. To do so, one must understand the wide variety of interactive direct marketing tools and tactics, test their performance, and assemble the best possible combination of new and old marketing tools to meet the needs of their customers and maximize sales growth.

IIPM B School : King Khan, Bollywood Badshah and Quiz Wiz — that’s Shah Rukh Khan for you

February 17, 2010 5 comments

When Bollywood’s biggest superstar came to Bangalore to host the grand finale of Dare 2010, the international business and marketing quiz organised by the Indian Institute of Planning and Management (IIPM) in association with 4Ps Business and Marketing magazine at the Koramangala Indoor Stadium, he put up quite a show for the six participating teams on stage and the hordes of fans in the audience. In between posing questions to the biz school teams — which included two international teams from the Booth School of Business, University of Chicago and the Kenan-Flagler Business School, University of North Carolina — SRK shook a leg, rattled off dialogues from his films and got up close and personal with his fans. And after four exhausting and nerve-racking rounds, Karanjot Singh and Alekhya Chakrabarty from IMT, Ghaziabad emerged the winners.

This was the second edition of the Dare Quiz, and Arindam Chaudhuri, dean, Centre for Economic Research and Advanced Studies, IIPM, said he was proud to bring it to Bangalore. “We wanted to come to Bangalore in a big way after hosting it in Delhi, and we’re glad that we were able to do that so soon,” he said.

Shah Rukh said the event was “great fun”. “I think it’s a really great idea, and I like quizzing and believe it’s a fun way to learn. And looking at the way IIPM organises the quiz — I think it’s just getting bigger and better. I like the whole personality-driven trait that IIPM has. The attitude that we should go into something with lots of goodness, research, a lot of knowledge and a little style is nice. So, its a pleasure working with IIPM,” he said.

IIPM conceptualized the grand final of Dare ‘10 — the most prestigious of international B-school student quizzes

January 28, 2010 1 comment

ON February 8, six teams, who have battled it out against over 100 international business schools (including London Business School, University of Chicago — Booth School of Business and Indiana University — Kelley School of Business) in four gruelling rounds, will reach the grand final of Dare ‘10 — the most prestigious of international B-school student quizzes.

It will be held at Koramangala Indoor Stadium, Bangalore, and hosted by none other than the legendary Shahrukh Khan. The winning team will receive Rs 2.5 lakh, with a second prize of Rs 1.5 lakh. Other prizes include Yamaha Fazer bikes, Videocon televisions, Nokia mobile phones and laptops.

The whole event was conceptualised by IIPM (Indian Institution of Planning and Management) and Expresso spoke exclusively to economist, management guru, distinguished author, not to mention honorary dean of IIPM, Professor Arindam Chaudhuri.

Questions on business and marketing will make up the majority of the quiz, but will be interspersed with audience interaction and also a special SRK bonus round. This will consist of questions concerning Khan’s career in its entirety. Finalists have already been advised to study up on all things Shahrukh! So, why select Shahrukh Khan as the host of Dare ’10? A man with the huge international appeal of Khan, paired with his reputation as ‘the most intelligent Bollwood actor’ and his economics background, renders him the obvious choice! Additionally, Khan and Chaudhuri are old friends. SRK’s presence is a ringing endorsement for the quiz, providing the event with suitable grandeur.

Self-help guru Prof Arindam Chaudhuri himself has previously written economic and management books catered for business minds, such as Count Your Chickens Before They Hatch and The Great Indian Dream, however his new publication, Discover The Diamond In You is ‘a book for the masses’. There is no ideal readership for this book, as Arindam Chaudhuri remarks it can be related to anyone ‘from a 10 year old boy to a 100 year old man’ who wishes to be inspired and who wishes for success.

Arindam Chaudhuri calls this 59-paged publications his “59 minute guide to success”, as in an age where even our coffee is instant and people rely so heavily on the internet, it is necessary for vital information to be conveyed in the most succinct manner possible. The book focuses on how we can all fulfill our true potential and achieve everything that we wish for.

With such a host of achievements under his belt, does Prof Arindam Chaudhuri have any pearls of wisdom for postgraduate students about to embark upon their business career? In these tough economic times, where we are in global recession and Indian markets are struggling, his advice is simple: students and post-graduates need to work doubly hard to get where they would have done two years ago. Companies have fewer jobs to offer and so it is of paramount importance that every prospective employee is giving 200 per cent to ensure that they succeed in their chosen field.

IIPM B School – Cicero’s Challenge

January 22, 2010 Leave a comment

To judge The Great Indian Debate Competition we had Prof. Arindam Chaudhuri (Hony. Dean IIPM), Rajat Sharma (CEO & Editor in chief, IndiaTV), Deepika Jindal (MD, Art’inox), Sulajja Motwani (MD, Kinetic Engineering Ltd) as our honorable judges.

Arindam Chaudhuri (IIPM Dean) – ‘Every human being is a diamond’

January 21, 2010 18 comments

After the successful launch of his recent book, Discover the Diamond in You, author and management guru Arindam Chaudhuri paid a visit to the DNA office at Lower Parel on Saturday, to interact with the staff and share his theories on being a successful human being.

His latest book, a 59-minute guide to success, is a follow-up to his previous bestseller Count Your Chickens Before they Hatch. “The book has less of management talk as compared to the previous book, so that it reaches out to the masses too. In this book, I have compared human beings to diamonds because I believe that all of us are diamonds in waiting. And there are four things that make up a diamond — carat, cut, colour and clarity,” said Prof. Arindam Chaudhuri, who is also honorary dean of the Indian Institute of Planning and Management (IIPM), a leading B-school in the country.

Elaborating on his theory, he further said that just as diamonds are measured by their carat value, humans can be measured by the depth in their personalities, which he said are represented by nine Ps: Passion, Positive Energy, Performance, Perseverance, Personality, People Skills, Perspective, Principles and Patriotism.

“My book shows the significance of these nine Ps and the way to nurture them to become a human diamond. The Bhagavad Gita says that the journey is more important than the end. So we need to focus on the right way to achieve success and not just measure it with our bank balance,” he said.

The noted economist also rued the nature of the current education system. “Our education system has a narrow focus and does not let the child develop individual characteristics. At our institute, we get graduates from IIT and other well known institutes but without any basic idea of their subjects, thanks to rote learning,” he said.

Arindam Chaudhuri has previously written books on leadership and motivation including The Great Indian Dream and several articles in management journals.
